Criminal Police Directorate
Interpol
INTERPOL, which stands for the International
Criminal Police Organization (ICPO), consists of 178 member countries and has its headquarters
in Lyon, France. Slovenia became a full member of INTERPOL in 1992.
PRINCIPLES AND OBJECTIVES OF THE INTERPOL ORGANISATION (ICPO)
- To ensure and promote the widest possible mutual assistance
between all criminal police authorities regardless of the differences in
legal systems existing in different countries and in the spirit of the Declaration
of Human Rights.
- To establish and develop all institutions which through mutual cooperation
will enable the prevention and suppression of ordinary law crimes. Interpol's
Constitution prohibits any intervention or activities of a political, military,
religious or racial character. The police of each Member State of INTERPOL
have established a special office, under the supervision of the government
in order to ensure and respond to all investigations - requests from local
and foreign police and judicial bodies. Such an office is called a National
Central Bureau (NCB).
NATIONAL CENTRAL BUREAU SLOVENIA (NCB SLOVENIA)
In Slovenia, the INTERPOL national central bureau is organised
within the scope of the General Police Directorate (GPU) - Criminal Police
Directorate. In actuality, it exists within the scope of the Criminal Police
Directorate (UKP) under the International Police Cooperation Division. As a
rule, NCBs are named after the capital city of the Member State, thus in Slovenia,
it is called INTERPOL LJUBLJANA.
The primary task of INTERPOL LJUBLJANA is to forward requests
for data related to police investigations in Slovenia to the appropriate NCBs
throughout the world and vice versa. At the national level, INTERPOL LJUBLJANA
is responsible for monitoring and ensuring suitable standards as dictated by
membership in the INTERPOL organisation. It also ensures Slovenia's active
role in the international organisation INTERPOL, which was confirmed by the
fact that Slovenia was entrusted with the organisation of the 24th European
Regional Conference of INTERPOL, which was successfully held from 10 - 12 May
1995 in Ljubljana. In order to ensure rapid and uninterrupted operations, INTERPOL
LJUBLJANA is incorporated into various autonomous computer communications networks.
