Slovenian borders and border crossing points at the external Schengen border


The total length of the Slovenian state border is 1,382 km while there are 63 border crossing points of different categories at the external Schengen border, as follows:

  • border crossing points for international traffic on the land border (road, railway) - 25
  • border crossing points for interstate traffic on the land border (road) - 10
  • border crossing points for local border traffic (60) on the land border (road) - 22
  • Border crossing points for international air traffic - 3
  • Border crossing points for international maritime traffic - 3

In the north, the Republic of Slovenia borders with the Republic of Austria. This border was determined by the Treaty of Saint-German (10.09.1919) and the Austrian State Treaty (15.05.1955). The length of the land and river border with the Republic of Austria is 330 km. 

In the west, the Republic of Slovenia borders with the Republic of Italy. This border was determined by the Paris Peace Treaty (10.02.1947), the London Memorandum (05.10.1954) and the Osimo Agreements (10.11.1975). The land border with Italy is 232 km long while the maritime border is 48 km long.

In the east, the Republic of Slovenia borders with the Republic of Hungary. This border was determined by the Peace Treaty of Trianon (04.06.1920). The land and partly river border with Hungary is 102 km long.

In the south, the Republic of Slovenia borders with the Republic of Croatia. This border has not been determined yet. According to the Surveying and Mapping Authority of the Republic of Slovenia, the land and river border with Croatia is 670 km long, while the length of the maritime border could not be determined yet. There are 57 border crossing points at the border with the Republic of Croatia.
