Slovenian borders

The total length of the Slovenian state border is 1,370 km.

In the north, the Republic of Slovenia borders with the Republic of Austria. This border was determined by the Treaty of Saint-German (10. 9. 1919) and the Austrian State Treaty (15. 5. 1955). The length of the land and river border with the Republic of Austria is 318 km.

In the west, the Republic of Slovenia borders with the Republic of Italy. This border was determined by the Paris Peace Treaty (10. 2. 1947), the London Memorandum ( 5. 10. 1954) and the Osimo Agreements (10. 11. 1975). The land border with Italy is 232 km long while the maritime border is 48 km long.

In the east, the Republic of Slovenia borders with the Republic of Hungary. This border was determined by the Peace Treaty of Trianon (4. 6. 1920). The land and partly river border with Hungary is 102 km long.

In the south, the Republic of Slovenia borders with the Republic of Croatia. There are 57 border crossing points at the border with the Republic of Croatia (external Schengen border)

There are 62 border crossing points of different categories at the external Schengen border, as follows:

• border crossing points for international traffic on the land border (road, railway) - 32
• border crossing points for local border traffic on the land border (road) - 25
• Border crossing points for international air traffic - 3
• Border crossing points for international maritime traffic - 2

Border with the Republic of Croatia

There are 57 border crossings at the border with Croatia:

a) Border crossing points for international traffic (32)

All travellers may cross the state border at border crossing points for international traffic. At some border crossing points, restrictions listed under Explanatory Notes apply for certain traveller categories or vehicle types. 

Explanatory notes

• Border crossing points Podgorje, Slovenska vas, Rigonce, Orešje, Imeno, Rogatec, Ormož and Gibina are reserved for persons enjoying the right of free movement under the European Union law (paragraph two of Article 2 of the Decree determining border crossing points, Official Gazette 18/2015)
• 'Persons enjoying the right of free movement under Union law’ means: (a) Union citizens within the meaning of Article 20(1) TFEU, and third-country nationals who are members of the family of a Union citizen exercising his or her right to free movement to whom Directive 2004/38/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (1) applies; (b) third-country nationals and their family members, whatever their nationality, who, under agreements between the Union and its Member States, on the one hand, and those third countries, on the other hand, enjoy rights of free movement equivalent to those of Union citizens
• At border crossing points Sočerga, Rigonce, Vinica and Imeno only trucks with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 7.5 tonnes are allowed (paragraph three of Article 2 of the Decree determining border crossing points, Official Gazette 18/2015)
• At border crossing points Sečovlje (Sicciole) - control post, Podgorje, Slovenska vas, Orešje, Rogatec, Ormož and Gibina only trucks with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes are allowed (paragraph four of Article 2 of the Decree determining border crossing points, Official Gazette 18/2015)
• Border crossing points are open round the clock, with the exception of BCP Podgorje, which is open from 1 June to 31 August from 6:00 to 24:00 and from 1 September to 31 May from 6:00 to 22:00 (paragraph five of Article 2 of the Decree determining border crossing points, Official Gazette 18/2015)
• Border crossing points for international railway traffic are open in accordance with the international railway timetable (paragraph two of Article 3 of the Decree determining border crossing points, Official Gazette 18/2015)

b) Border crossing points for local border traffic (25)

Border crossing points for local border traffic are reserved for beneficiaries of the Agreement on Border Traffic and Cooperation (local border traffic permit holders) as well as persons enjoying the European Union's right of free movement.
 

Explanatory Notes:

• Border crossing points for local border traffic are reserved for beneficiaries of the Agreement on Border Traffic and Cooperation.
• All persons enjoying the European Union's right of free movement may cross the state border at border crossing points for local border traffic with a passport or identity card (paragraph two of Article 4 of the Decree determining border crossing points, Official Gazette 18/2015)
