The Slovenian Police is endeavouring to improve road traffic safety and is extremely active in improving safety in the international arena. In addition to participating in numerous working groups of the European Commission, it takes an active part in all other international organisations related to road traffic safety.

Among the organisations with which the Police cooperates as far as possible is the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL). In the period from 30 September to 1 October 2008, it will organise one of the biggest conferences on safety and road traffic control, to be held in the UK (Harrogate). We believe the best and the most interesting examples of good practices of different European policies were chosen to be presented at the conference. Among other things, the activities of the Slovenian Police aimed at ensuring the safety of motorcyclists will be presented, thus showing recognition of efforts made by the Slovenian Police in this area.

Furthermore, the police continue to actively control the observance of regulations in the area of ensuring road traffic safety, which is one of the priorities of the work of the Slovenian Police. Emphasis is laid particularly on offences related to speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and not using safety belts.

It has been established that after the entry into force of the amendments to the Road Transport Safety Act, the majority of drivers observe traffic rules to a greater extent. Therefore, speed is lower and there are fewer examples of dangerous and aggressive driving. To date, 77 persons have died due to motor vehicle traffic accidents - 18 persons fewer than in the same period last year, when 95 persons died.

Police will continue to control traffic with the same intensity in the future as well. We call upon all road users to consistently adapt their behaviour to traffic rules and traffic signs. This will be particularly important in the coming period, when weather conditions will be more favourable and general conditions better for driving, which might result in driving at a higher speed and providing more possibilities for traffic accidents.
