Both some diseases and medications can affect a person's psychophysical abilities and reduce their ability to drive a motor vehicle safely.

Driving under the influence of psychoactive drugs can be very dangerous, significantly increases the risk of being involved in a traffic accident and is therefore prohibited.

Among the possible effects of some medicines are namely drowsiness, fatigue, light-headedness, nausea, vertigo, tremors, visual disturbances, night blindness, reduced concentration, convulsions, restlessness, aggressiveness, etc. As much as 10 percent of traffic accidents in the European Union countries are related to the use of drugs that have a negative impact on the driver's psychophysical abilities. The number of drivers driving under the influence of drugs, psychoactive medications and other psychoactive substances has also been increasing on Slovenian roads in recent years, so this problem should not be underestimated.picture of a range of different medicines

It is extremely important to pay attention to how our body reacts to a new drug. If we notice that the drug affects our reactions, the ability to concentrate, makes us sleepy, or has any other side effects, we must inform the doctor about it, and we should avoid driving or demanding activities!

The most common factors in the most serious traffic accidents are speed and drunk-driving. We know that alcohol has a negative effect on all human functions that are important for safe participation in road traffic (it reduces concentration, the ability to perceive stimuli and respond to them, increases the number of mistakes the driver makes while driving), which makes drunk-driving prohibited by law. Driving under the influence of drugs, psychoactive medications and other psychoactive substances is also prohibited! These substances also significantly impair the driver's ability to safely participate in traffic, similar to alcohol.

Drivers are therefore advised to:

  • follow the doctors' instructions regarding driving;
  • follow the doctors' instructions regarding drug dosages;
  • pay attention to the markings on the medicine packages (triangle):

    triangle redfilled triangle - absolute prohibition of driving vehicles
    triangle emptyempty triangle - relative prohibition on driving vehicles

  • be very careful when drinking alcoholic beverages during therapy, as the combination of even a small amount of alcohol and a psychoactive drug can greatly increase the negative effects on driving.

According to the Road Traffic Rules Act, a driver shall not drive a vehicle in road traffic or start driving it if he is under the influence of illegal drugs, psychoactive drugs or other psychoactive substances and their metabolites that reduce his ability to drive. The penalty for this offence is a fine of at least €1,200 and 18 penalty points.

The impact of psychoactive drugs is determined by a professional examination, which includes a medical examination that identifies signs of behavioral disorders, which can cause unsafe behavior in traffic, and taking samples of blood, urine or body fluids for toxicological research, which determines the presence of these substances in the body.
