Yesterday, 9 September 2009, a regional ministerial conference on illegal migrations, organized crime, corruption and terrorism organized at Brdo pri Kranju came to an end.
The first topic was visa liberalization which Slovenia exposed as a priority already when presiding the European Council. Its goal is to increase citizens' mobility, promote contacts between people and enhance economic cooperation between countries. Mobility, however, goes hand to hand with safety, in the EU as well as in the Western Balkans. Therefore police cooperation, fight against terrorism and corruption as well as adjustment of asylum, migration and human rights policies to the standards of the European Union are extremely important.
The assessment of the level of threat arising from organized crime in South-eastern Europe shows that some forms of criminal activities, such as trafficking in human beings, printing and forgery of money or arms trading, are on the increase. For this reason the countries participating at the conference agreed on a closer cooperation by setting up so-called joint investigation groups in concrete cases.
