The Division performs tasks in the field of State border security, illegal migrations and foreigners. It plans, organises and monitors the work of the units which are conducting border checks and border surveillance, participates in investigations of criminal offences and violations on the State border and border incidents, coordinates activities for prevention the illegal migrations and prepares new legislation on foreigners. In the second instance, it decides on matters related to crossing of the State border, and coordinates the work with the Centre for Foreigners.

Within its field of work, it monitors and evaluates security conditions and the efficiency of police work, participates in the preparation of legislation and directives and in the improvement of tactics and work methods, in the processing of computer data and their mediation to the public. It also takes care of the implementation of international agreements and of the Schengen standards for the protection of the State border. In addition to international cooperation, it also cooperates with other state authorities and organizations.

Operation Section

  • Analyses and evaluates the security situation as well as effectiveness and success of police work in connection to border security (border checks and border surveillance) and investigating border incidents;
  • Plans, organises, expertly directs and supervises the performance of police tasks at sea and at airports;
  • Directs and coordinates the work of police directorates in its working field whenever coordinated operations are required in a wider region;
  • Ensures professional assistance in its field of work and supervises the legality and effectiveness of police work;
  • Cooperates in the supplementation of tactics and police work methods (border checks and border surveillance) monitoring in its working field;
  • Ensures the execution of regulations in its working field, prepares expert directions and plans and carries out measures for effective police work,
  • Cooperates with law enforcement bodies of other countries and international organisations in its field of work;
  • Cooperates in the development and adaptation of computer applications and the collection and processing of data from its field of work.

Specialised Unit for State Border Control

The Unit performs police tasks, which also require special skills or knowledge and special equipment within the territory of the Republic of Slovenia, which need to be implemented in a coordinated way throughout the Police, namely:

  • Performs control over the State border using optoelectronic systems and vehicle checks with mobile facilities using electronic and fibreoptic devices;
  • Performs stricter and targeted controls on State borders, on the frontier area and within the country for the prevention, discovery and investigation of trans-border crime, illegal migration, smuggling of illicit drugs, weapons, ammunition, stolen vehicles and the use of forged or stolen travel documents;
  • Participates in the preparation and implementation of special skills and knowledge from this field of work;
  • Ensures the maintenance, rational use and testing of material-technical resources for the unit's work;
  • Performs the tasks of a minor offence authority in line with regulations;
  • Participates in the preparation of systems and standards and the planning of material-technical resources for the unit's work;
  • Performs the tasks in the Police cooperation Centre at Vrata Megvarje and in the Center of Law Enforcement Cooperation in Dolga vas.

Border Management Section

  • Monitors and evaluates the security situation and effectiveness and success of police work in the area of illegal migration and foreigners;
  • Cooperates in the development and adaptation of computer applications and the collection and processing of data from its field of work;
  • Cooperates with law enforcement authorities of other countries and international organisations in its field of work;
  • Administrates the National Focal Point of Contact in order to cooperate with Frontex;
  • Coordinates the Frontex operational activities at the EU external borders;
  • Performs certain duties related to the EUROSUR National Coordination Centre;
  • Carries out risk analysis in the area of illegal migration at the national level;
  • Coordinates international cooperation in the area of border police;
  • Cooperates within projects related to EU grants;
  • Cooperates in development of the EU and national legislation in the area of illegal migration and foreigners.
