On 12 October 2025, Slovenia and other EU countries will start implementing the Entry/Exit System (EES) at the external Schengen border, in accordance with Regulations (EU) 2017/2226 and 2025/1534. The new border management system will be introduced gradually, with full implementation by 10 April 2026, and will make travelling to Europe easier and border checks more efficient.
API data is required to be provided by air carriers for flights arriving from third countries or from EU member states to Slovenia and vice versa, and for flights with a stopover in Slovenia.
Like other EU member states, the Slovenian Police collect information on air passengers in order to prevent, detect, investigate and prosecute terrorist offences and other serious crimes. Focused only on persons posing a high risk to human safety, the system of processing passenger data ensures a high level of security for the remaining passengers, allowing them to continue to move freely and safely within the Schengen area.
As provided for in an EU directive, all member states collect and exchange information on air passengers. The purpose of such data collection and processing is to ensure safety for EU citizens and prevent terrorism and other forms of serious crime. Passenger data is also collected by the Slovenian Police.
Due to the current migration situation we have decided to post some information on the work of the Slovenian police in the area of border issues and foreigners. It contains especially explanation on those tasks and responsibilities that refer to foreigners who cross the state border illegally.

Border checks are checks carried out at a border crossing point with a view to verifying the fulfilment of requirements for crossing the external Schengen border; they are obligatory for all travellers who have already crossed or are about to cross the state border and apply to their vehicles and items in their possession as well.
