The Biological Examination Section performs biological and genetic (DNA) examinations and examinations of concrete micro-traces - textile fibres, textiles and human and animal hair. The Section keeps and maintains a record of DNA examinations. In accordance with the requirements of the Pr├╝m Treaty the Section also acts as the national contact point for the exchange of DNA profiles between Parties.

Examinations consist of visual inspection, macroscopic and/or microscopic inspection, preliminary chemical and immunological tests, comparative microscopic and spectrophotometric methods and different molecular genetic methods and techniques (classic PCR and real-time PCR, DNA profiling).

The list of examinations performed by this section can be found in Appendix . Besides laboratory examinations employees of the Biological Examination Section also carry out examinations of latent blood traces in the field.
