Yesterday, 12 October 2025, the Slovenian police successfully launched the electronic Entry Exit System (EES) at its external Schengen border (the border crossing points at airports and ports).

The first to be registered in the EES system at Slovenian border crossing points were third-country nationals arriving at Ljubljana-Brnik Airport from Belgrade, Serbia. The first registrations went smoothly, and despite the additional procedures involved, there were no long waiting times.

In the coming months, the Slovenian police will step up the use of the EES system for third-country nationals who have to be registered in the system, and will begin using it in full in April next year. More on this: Gradual introduction of the new Entry/Exit System (EES) at the external Schengen border

New system to make border checks more efficient

The EES is the European Union's central IT system for registering third-country nationals travelling for a short stay in the Schengen area, whose entry and exit are required to be registered in the system in accordance with EU Regulation 2017/2226. The implementation of this system will not directly affect other travellers.

The new method of registering passengers will eventually replace the current, often time-consuming stamping of travel documents of nationals of these countries. The system introduces new standards and procedures for the work of the police, immigration authorities, and visa-issuing authorities. It also enables automated verification of third-country nationals’ biometric data entered into the system. In administrative and police procedures, the system will thus contribute to more effective control of short stay of third-country nationals in the territory of the Member States.
