On 16 June 2025, joint trilateral police patrols involving officers from Slovenia, Croatia and Italy began operating along Croatia's external border.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in reinforcing regional police cooperation as part of a collective effort to strengthen the security and protection of the EU's external borders. The joint patrols aim to improve coordinated control of the Schengen area's external borders, combat cross-border crime and curb irregular migration.

Slovenia has assigned four police officers for the initial three-month deployment. They will patrol the area under the jurisdiction of the Karlovac Police Directorate, working alongside their Croatian and Italian counterparts.

The foundation for this form of cooperation was established in a joint letter of intent, signed in February 2024 by the Directors General of the Slovenian, Croatian and Italian police forces.
