On 16 May 2025, State Secretary Helga Dobrin and Acting Director General of the Police Damjan PetriÄŤ hosted a courtesy visit from Deputy Executive Director of Frontex Aija Kalnaja.
The discussions centred on strengthening security in response to emerging challenges, particularly hybrid and cyber threats, which are increasingly impacting the protection of the EU’s external borders. Participants agreed that the evolving security landscape calls for a thorough reassessment of Europe’s overall security framework. They also addressed the European Commission’s intention to propose a renewal or possible expansion of Frontex’s mandate in the coming year—an initiative Slovenia supports in principle.
Frontex is undoubtedly a key partner for Slovenia, playing a vital role in strengthening the effective protection of the EU’s external borders through its operational engagement. Slovenia recognises the importance of all Member States contributing to this shared responsibility and reaffirmed its strong support for Frontex’s activities—particularly in the Western Balkans, where the majority of Slovenia’s deployments are currently concentrated. During the visit, the Deputy Executive Director of Frontex expressed her appreciation for Slovenia's active involvement and praised its contributions to the agency’s operations.
The Slovenian police have been working with Frontex since the agency’s establishment in 2004. Over the years, this close cooperation has allowed both sides to build on shared knowledge and experience, contributing to safer borders and more effective migration management across the EU.
