Director General of the Police Senad Jušić and his Assistant Jože Senica responded to the invitiation and paid a working visit to the Directir General of the Hunarian police János Balogh on 13 and 14 March 2024. In addition to the Director General Balogh, the Hungarian delegation consisted of Levente Baukó and Zsolt Polyák from the Csongrád-Csanád County Police.
The highest police representatives of both countries discussed the current topics of migration, people smuggling and the protection of state borders. Senad Jušić and Jože Senica visited the motorway border crossing point Röszke, where their Hungarian counterparts presented the border security system and the Border Police Remote Monitoring Control Centre in Mórahalom. They viewed the area of the state border with a helicopter and visited the special Hungarian police unit for rapid response.
Director General Jušić assessed that Slovenia has excellent cooperation with the Hungarian law enforcement authorities. Slovenian police officers regularly collaborate with their Hungarian colleagues and participate in evets and professional trainings in Hungary. Slovenia and its neighbouring countries in the region are facing a number of challenges that require a joint and immediate response, which makes the visits of this nature a good opportunity to openly discuss the topics of shared interest.
Management of irregular migration is one of the major current challenges in Slovenia and Hungary alike and it needs to be addressed with a joint effort from all the countries in the region. Slovenian police recorded 60,603 irregular border crossings in 2023 and 6,387 irregular border crossings in the first two months of this year. In 2023, Slovenian police recorded 1,203 irregular entries on the internal border with Hungary, which was 84 % more than in 2022, and represented 2 % of all irregular entries.
