Slovenia is renowned as one of the safest countries in Europe. However, with the festive season approaching, the increased number of public events brings potential safety risks. Amid the holiday cheer, it is easy to let our guard down, which provides criminals with their window of opportunity. To ensure you enjoy a safe and memorable holiday season, the Slovenian police prepared some tips to keep you and your loved ones safe.
Stay alert in crowded areas
Public events and venues like Christmas markets become bustling hubs during the festive season. However, the increase in public gatherings and crowds from December through to the Orthodox New Year on 14 January 2025 also brings a heightened security risk. Visitors to events with large crowds are advised to stay vigilant.
Protect your belongings
When attending public events, take special care of your personal belongings in crowded areas to protect yourself against theft. Keep wallets and phones in inner pockets, hold your bags securely and avoid carrying valuables. Never leave handbags, briefcases, wallets, valuables or other personal items in plain sight in vehicles.
Beware of counterfeit banknotes – the surge in cash transactions during the festive season increases the circulation of fake Euro banknotes. Verify the banknotes every time you make a cash payment, especially large denominations. If you suspect a banknote is counterfeit, refrain from using it. Instead, bring it to the bank or inform the police.
Secure your home from intruders
Always ensure all doors are locked and windows closed, even if only stepping out briefly. Avoid leaving valuables or money in plain sight, especially near windows or front doors. If you are planning a trip, inform your neighbours so they can keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. Create the appearance of occupancy by leaving a car in the driveway or using a timer to turn lights on and off.
While you might be tempted to share festive moments on social media, be cautious about posting information about your travels or absences, as this may inadvertently alert potential burglars.
Have you fallen victim to a crime? Call the police!
If despite all the precautions you fall victim to a crime or witness suspicious activity, contact the police immediately. Your vigilance and cooperation with the police are vital to keeping the community safe. So if you notice anything unusual, call the emergency number 113, or report it to the nearest police station or officer.
Exercise patience on the road, drive safely and never drink and drive!
Before the upcoming holidays, Slovenian police again urges all road users to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Such careless behaviour endangers lives and can have devastating consequences.
Increased traffic is expected throughout December, especially near shopping centres and town centres, where Christmas markets and other events will be taking place. Road users are therefore urged to remain patient, stay calm and follow the traffic instructions provided by police officers in these areas.
Check your travel documents
Anyone planning to travel abroad during the upcoming holidays is advised to check the validity of their travel documents. Ensure that your passport or ID (depending on your chosen destination) is valid before crossing the border, and review safety and security conditions in your destination country.
Keep children safe
As the festive season approaches, filled with numerous holiday outings, visits to shopping centres and social gatherings, the Slovenian police are highlighting the importance of ensuring the safety of children and preventing peer violence. During this time children are more often outdoors, attending events, visiting shopping centres or spending time in urban areas, making it crucial for parents and guardians to take extra precautions to ensure their safety. Parents and guardians are advised to accompany their children at all times. Teach them essential safety measures and ensure they know who to contact in case of an emergency.
Stay safe at parties
With an increased number of festive celebrations in the run-up to the New Year, there is also an increased risk of drink spiking. Young people, in particular, are exposed to a number of illicit drugs, the consumption of which is supposed to bring them more joy and relaxation. Illicit drugs are increasingly being misused and contain a mixture of dangerous and unknown substances.
To stay safe, drink only from factory-sealed bottles or cans, always keep an eye on your drink and never accept drinks from strangers. If you suspect that your drink has been spiked, immediately alert your friends or someone you trust and have them take you to the E.R.
Use fireworks responsibly
During the festive season, especially in the days surrounding Christmas and particularly New Year's, the skies are often illuminated by fireworks. Even though Slovenian police discourages the use of pyrotechnics, some individuals still find them irresistible. However, misuse of pyrotechnics can lead to serious injuries. Fireworks and other pyrotechnics also cause great distress to animals. Improper use of pyrotechnics can result in fines ranging from €400 to €1,200, along with the mandatory confiscation of the pyrotechnic device.
The Slovenian police wishes you a safe and joyful holiday season!
