On Monday, the Slovenian national football team faced Portugal in the eighth-final match of UEFA EURO 2024 at Frankfurt Arena, Germany. Slovenian police officers, tasked with ensuring security throughout the championship, vigilantly oversaw the event, contributing to a safe and orderly atmosphere.
Much to the dismay of over 7,000 passionately cheering Slovenian fans at the stadium, the Slovenian national team, despite a stellar performance during the regular time, narrowly missed advancing to the quarter-finals after losing the match against Portugal in nail-biting penalties.
As in all previous UEFA EURO 2024 matches involving the Slovenian national team, Slovenian police officers played a crucial role in maintaining safety at the Monday match. Following the team's match against England, Slovenian police officers at the International Police Cooperation Center (IPCC) started gathering information on the number and mode of transport of Slovenian fans travelling to the Portugal match. The information was then shared with their German counterparts to bolster security measures at the event.
The day before the match, Slovenian police spotters, alongside German police officers, conducted thorough searches of fan meeting points in Frankfurt's city centre and the stadium where the match was to take place.
Uniformed Slovenian police officers also assisted their German counterparts in the fan zones and at the Frankfurt central train station. On match day, uniformed police officers and spotters detected and addressed the use of pyrotechnics in the fan zone and at the stadium, and, together with the German police, identified one offender who was setting off pyrotechnics during the match. Fortunately, the event proceeded without major incidents or riots.
With the Slovenian team's journey in the European Championship coming to an end, Slovenian police officers have successfully completed their mission in Germany and will be returning home. Their efforts have been indispensable in ensuring the safety and security of the championship.
