Through community police officers, whose job is to interact with the public, and local community representatives we will continue to introduce projects for the blind and visually impaired. We will follow the examples of good practice introduced by Nova Gorica Police Directorate with the project entitled Hand in hand - together for the safety of the blind and visually impaired. The purpose of the campaign is to raise the awareness of those who are blind and visually impaired on self-protective road safety techniques. The campaign also seeks to raise public awareness of the fact that people with eyesight problems are also a part of society.

The campaign will be rolled out nationwide and supplemented by workshops, consultations, team work in local level safety councils, a Mobility Day event, and many more.

The police activities for the safety of the blind and visually impaired were presented by Marija Mikulan of the Division for Police Powers and Prevention.

The purpose of this cooperation is to improve the safety of the blind and visually impaired and get acquainted with their lives so we can avoid any inconvenience resulting from poor knowledge or a lack of information on either of the two groups. We shall endeavour to assist those with sight loss and help them overcome everyday obstacles.

President of the Union of Blind and Visually Impaired Associations of Slovenia Tomaž Wraber confirmed that there are many people with poor eyesight in Slovenia. "The Union has approximately 4 000 members associated in intermunicipal societies, but some data suggest that the figures are much higher, around 10 000 or perhaps even more. It is patently clear that many of those with sight problems remain hidden away in their homes, helpless and in need of encouragement and understanding."

The police have always engaged in prevention activities, especially those targeting vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and persons with disabilities who are likely to become victims in road accidents, crime or other violent acts. A diverse range of prevention efforts and methods are our tools for making their life at home and at work as safe as possible.
