Today, 30 January 2009 at the Ministry of the Interior in Ljubljana, Acting Director General of the Police Matjaž Šinkovec received two police officers who are leaving tomorrow for EUMM in Georgia.

The officers leaving for the international civilian mission are:

  • Police officer Boštjan Grm, employed with the police since 1997 and working on security of persons and buildings in the Security and Protection Office. He already has experience in missions, having been to UNMIK mission in Kosovo between 2006 and 2007.

  • Police officer Robert Mastnak Mlakar, employed with the police since 1989 and working in the Operation and Communication Centre of the Police Directorate Ljubljana. He already has experience in missions, having been to UNMIK mission in Kosovo between 2004 and 2005.

After the reception, Marko Rode, duly authorised by Head of the Peacekeeping Missions Section, presented at the press conference the international civilian mission in Georgia.

The purpose of the EUMM mission is to contribute to the stability of the situation in Georgia and the surrounding region, first by participating in stabilising the situation pursuant to the six-point agreement endorsed in Moscow and Tbilisi on 8 September through EU mediation, and subsequently by practical measures.


The main tasks of EUMM mission are:

  • to supervise and analyse the situation in the light of the stabilisation process, with emphasis on effort to reach compliance with the six-point agreement;
  • to supervise and analyse the situation in the light of the normalisation of the situation and return of internally displaced persons and refugees; and
  • contribute to tension reduction by mediating, offering support in contacts between the two parties and through other mutual confidence-building measures.
