Deputy Police Director General Matjaž Šinkovec received on 23 October 2007, together with the director of the Uniformed Police Administration at the General Police Administration, Danijel Žibret, the director of the Criminal Police Administration at the General Police Administration, Aleksander Jevšek, and Dušan Klobasa and Marko Rode from the security planning and peacekeeping missions division of the Uniformed Police Administration at the General Police Administration, in the premises of the Ministry of the Interior at 2 Štefanova Street in Ljubljana the police officers departing for the international peacekeeping mission UNMIK in Kosovo.
There are currently 15 Slovenian police officers serving in the UNMIK peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. It is expected that seven officers will be deployed to the UNMIK peacekeeping mission in Kosovo in the second half of November 2007. They will replace a group of seven who are concluding their one-year tour in Kosovo.
The following police officers are departing for the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK): Niko Avguštinčič from the Police Station Trebnje of the Police Administration Novo mesto, Almir Babić from the Information and Telecommunications Office at the General Police Administration, Fredi Močnik from the traffic police station at the Police Administration Murska Sobota, Peter Voršič from the Police Station Maribor I at the Police Administration Maribor, Boštjan Velički from the Police Station Šentilj at the Police Administration Maribor, Ivan Kelher from the Police Academy of the General Police Administration and Aleš Vidgaj from the Specialised Police Unit. They will carry out various police, security, advisory and operative tasks at various posts during their one-year tour.
According to Deputy Police Director General Matjaž Šinkovec, by carrying out demanding security tasks in this area, Slovenian police officers have boosted the reputation of the Slovenian police and Slovenia, even on a global scale. The work of Slovenian police officers in the international peacekeeping mission UNMIK in Kosovo has been valued by their colleagues as well as by the local population.
The Slovenian police have participated in peacekeeping and other international missions since October 1997, when the first Slovenian police officer was deployed to the MAPE mission in Albania on the initiative of the National Assembly of the RS and under a resolution of the Government of the RS.
