The Italian government announced that it intends to reintroduce temporary control at all its borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, for security reasons to provide more effective security during the G8 summit to be held in Aquila from 10 to 12 July 2009.

The temporary reintroduction border controls at the internal borders by the Italian authorities will last for 18 days, i.e. from 28 June to 15 July 2009.

In line with established practice, Italy will carry out systematic target-oriented border controls with slow-moving traffic at all border crossings.

Before the reintroduction of border control at internal borders, we would like to inform citizens of the Republic of Slovenia in particular that they need to carry an identification document (personal identity card or passport).

In accordance with the prescribed procedure, the Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Italy, Roberto Maroni, has informed the EU authorities and interior ministers of the EU and Schengen Member States of this security measure.

This option, which is provided for and allowed by the Schengen Agreement, is one of the standard measures to provide more effective security during certain events with a high security risk.

The temporary reintroduction of border control at internal borders, which is in accordance with the so-called Schengen Border Code, is a unilateral act enabling or allowing Schengen Member States to exceptionally reintroduce border control at internal borders in the event of a serious threat to their public policy or internal security for a limited period of no more than 30 days (Member States may exceptionally prolong this period).

For more information on the Italian temporary reintroduction of border control at internal borders see press release of the Ministry of the Interior.
