The formal address was delivered by the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, who attended the ceremony as a guest of honour.

On 30 June, a memorial was unveiled commemorating the nation's resolve to protect the State as well as the unity and confidence that brought together the Slovenian people, the police and the Slovenian Territorial Defence. The memorial honours the victims of the Independence War and serves as a reminder of the events that took place in 1991.

In the President's view, the memorial will always serve as a reminder of the time when the Slovenian Territorial Defence and the police prevented the Yugoslav People's Army from occupying the airport and isolating Slovenia from the rest of the international community.

The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of the Interior, Katarina Kresal, and the Director General of the Police, Janko Goršek. In his address, Goršek stressed that the police have come a long way over the past 20 years. "This anniversary is a wonderful opportunity for us to show that our organisation has grown in maturity, that it has become responsible and open, and is no less successful than any other European police organisation. In the face of all the barriers in its path and the social changes that have taken place, the police have stood tall and strong. They have never failed to support their fellow citizens."
