On 12 January 2024, Slovenian police officers picked up an escaped prisoner in Berlin who had been serving a prison sentence in Slovenia for several offences and had taken the opportunity to escape to Germany last October while being transported to Ljubljana for a medical check-up.
A court in Novo mesto issued an arrest warrant, an international arrest warrant and a European arrest warrant for him. The person escaped while serving a 10-year prison sentence for several offences: attempted murder, violent conduct, causing general danger, attack on an official and domestic violence.
On 8 November 2023, on the basis of information from the Slovenian police and excellent international police cooperation in the area of tracing persons, the German police arrested him in Berlin, where he was picked up by Slovenian police officers last Friday and transported to Slovenia. Upon return to the country, he was handed over to the judicial authorities.
The arrest of the escaped prisoner is the result of successful international police cooperation between the Slovenian and German criminal police and the active participation of the Slovenian criminal police in the European Network of Fugitive Active Search Teams – ENFAST.
