The 108th edition of the Giro d’Italia is coming to Slovenia! On Saturday, 24 May 2025, the stunning hills of Brda and Collio, together with Nova Gorica and its Italian twin Gorizia, will host a spectacular cross-border stage of the iconic Corsa Rosa. In the spirit of cross-border cooperation, we are proud to announce that the Slovenian police will be taking part – not only to help ensure the safety of riders and spectators, but also by joining the race as participants.
Slovenian leg of the Giro d'Italia
The 14th stage of the prestigious Giro d’Italia will be broadcast to over 800 million viewers across 198 countries. The race will pass through the scenic hills of Brda, a region dotted with vineyards, orchards and olive groves. Cyclists will enter Slovenia at Plešivo and continue through Medana, Dobrovo, Šmartno, Kojsko and Hum. The route will then re-enter Italy for a few kilometres, passing through San Floriano del Collio, before concluding this section in Nova Gorica.
A sporting first for the Slovenian police
Three Slovenian police officers will team up with three Italian colleagues to form the Police Without Borders cycling team and compete in the Giro-E, the official e-bike event held alongside the Giro d’Italia. This marks the first-ever sporting participation of the Slovenian police in one of the world’s most widely followed sporting events.
Representing the Slovenian police on e-bikes:
- Domen Prevc, current world champion and record-holder in ski jumping, employed at the Top Athletes Centre of the Slovenian police;
- Mario Sajko, current men’s Slovenian police road cycling champion, from the Novo mesto Police Directorate;
- Meta Špacapan, current women’s Slovenian police road cycling champion, from the Nova Gorica Police Directorate.
The Slovenian team will be coordinated by Simon RosiÄŤ from the Public Relations Division of the General Police Directorate. Representing the Italian side are officers from the Gorizia Railway Police unit:
- Paolo Taverna,
- Roberto Kriznich,
- Luciano Gonano.
Where and when will our Police Without Borders cycling team start?
On 24 May 2025, the joint Slovenian-Italian team will take part in the Giro-E, the traditional e-bike race held alongside the Giro d’Italia. This promotional event brings together teams made up of well-known figures from the worlds of sport, entertainment and public life, with the aim of promoting widespread cycling participation and encouraging the use of electric bicycles.
The race will begin at 13:10 in Cormons and is expected to finish around 15:15 at Europe Square in Nova Gorica. Following the race, participants will be available for media interviews. Members of the press are warmly invited to attend.
Join the roundtable: "Sharing the road – from self-control to tolerance"
From 14:15 to 15:15, a roundtable discussion will be held at the Eda Centre (Delpinova ulica 18b, Nova Gorica), focusing on respectful coexistence on the road. Among the speakers will be Martin Hvastija, a renowned former Slovenian cyclist and current coach at the Top Athletes Centre of the Slovenian police.
Visit us at Bevk Square in Nova Gorica from 11:00
The Slovenian police will host a promotional stand in Bevk Square, with a full day of activities kicking off at 11:00. The programme will feature a big screen, live DJ, children’s entertainment, culinary delights and a variety of accompanying activities. Police officers will be on hand to present their work and provide information on career opportunities within the force, as well as the requirements for enrolment at the Police College. A special highlight for all attendees, especially the youngest, will be our beloved mascot, Leon the Bear.
We will also be working with our Italian counterparts to ensure safety
As the route of Saturday’s stage crosses two countries, the Slovenian police are already coordinating with their Italian counterparts to manage escort and security operations. With extensive experience in overseeing international events of this scale, we are committed to protecting all participants and visitors with professionalism and goodwill. Detailed information on road closures will be published in the coming days.
