Slovenian police celebrated the annual Police Day on 27 June 2026. Representatives of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Administration, the Police and veterans’ organisations laid wreaths at the Tacen Memorial Park and at Nove Žale in Ljubljana, to honour the memory of the police officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice – their lives – for security, independence and the country.
Police Day is a day of remembrance, respect and gratitude to all veterans of the war for Slovenia and to those who laid the foundations of the Slovenian police force. We remember the courage, unity and sense of responsibility of the people who, at the decisive moments of Slovenia’s independence, actively participated in the creation and protection of the nascent state. Police Day is also a day of gratitude to all the past and present generations of police officers, who, through their professional, lawful and dedicated work, contribute to the safety of the people every day.
At the memorials in the Tacen Memorial Park and at the monument to those who fell in the 1991 War for Slovenia at Nove Žale in Ljubljana, a delegation from the Ministry of the Interior and Public Administration, the Police and the Sever Federation of Police Veterans’ Associations, led by the Minister for the Interior and Public Administration, Franci Matoz, laid wreaths to honour the memory of the police officers who lost their lives in the 1991 War of Independence, and to the colleagues who lost their lives carrying out police duties after 1991.
Today marks the end of a month of celebrations, which began with the main ceremony on 3 June in Krško. Several events and ceremonies have taken place across the country throughout the month to mark the Police Day, showcase the police work, and strengthen the bond between the police and the public.
On Police Day, the Acting Director-General of the Police Danijel Lorbek emphasised that the Slovenian police will continue to carry out their work professionally, lawfully and efficiently. As he said, the police profession is one of the most indispensable and honourable in the society. He will therefore pay particular attention to supporting police officers and all staff, strengthening the security in local communities and maintaining public trust.
After all, the police do not exist for their own sake. They are at the service of the people and their safety. That is why the trust the citizens have in our work is of the highest importance. Safety is not merely the result of the work of the police, but of the cooperation with the public, who, through reporting incidents, acting responsibly and being willing to help, make a significant contribution to ensuring that Slovenia remains a safe country.
On Police Day, we would therefore like to thank the public for their trust, support and cooperation. We are also grateful to all state institutions, the protection and rescue services, the judicial authorities and other services and organisations we daily work with to ensure safety and security. This trust and mutual support cannot be taken for granted, and we will continue to strengthen them through lawful, responsible and respectful work.
On the occasion of our day, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all police officers for their dedication, professionalism and daily work for the benefit of the public.
