The Ministry of the Interior, the Police and the UN High Commission for Refugees have been cooperating since Slovenia became a member of the United Nations. Their cooperation has been excellent and to the mutual interest of both parties. The UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) participates as an observer in police procedures involving persons who seek international protection. The Police, on the other hand, needs the UNHCR's expertise and information on illegal migrations not only in the region, but also elsewhere in the world. This agreement regulates mutual relations in police procedures involving persons seeking international protection.

Cooperation between the Police and the UNHCR mainly takes place through the exchange of information on illegal migrations in the country, region and globally, the exchange of information on the situation in the areas or regions where applicants for international protection come from, working meetings, training of police officers and observers, and through monitoring police procedures involving persons seeking international protection. The UNHCR operates under this agreement in accordance with its organisation and in line with regulations governing the asylum procedures in Slovenia. The agreement will undoubtedly further improve the successful cooperation to date.
