Slovenia has in the last few days met all the technical conditions for the exchange of fingerprint records among Member States, thus becoming one of the first countries to meet the technical conditions for the exchange of data of this type with other Member States (alongside Germany and Austria). Slovenia is already successfully exchanging data on DNA profiles, and expects to meet all technical conditions for the exchange of vehicle data in 2009.

This news was highlighted today at an informal meeting of the joint working group set up on the basis of the Prüm Treaty (a treaty between the Kingdom of Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Kingdom of Spain, the French Republic, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Republic of Austria on the stepping up of cross-border cooperation, particularly in combating terrorism, cross-border crime and illegal migrations), which is taking place in Ljubljana.

Slovenia has been a full member of this working group since 8 August 2007. The group's function is to assist the ministerial committee by examining the application and interpretation of the Prüm Treaty and establishing whether it needs to be amended or supplemented. In this connection the working group directs the work of the technical working bodies responsible for the implementation of individual segments of the treaty, which are: DNA profiles, fingerprint data, vehicle data, terrorism and major events, repatriation of aliens and police cooperation.

At today's meeting the joint working group dealt with monitoring progress in the transposition of the Prüm Treaty into EU law; members exchanged information regarding the strengthening of cross-border cooperation of members of the Prüm partnership in combating terrorism and cross-border crime and reviewed the state of implementation of the Prüm Treaty. They also examined views on the method of communicating information to the Commission with regard to the state of international treaties in the sphere of police cooperation.

Within the context of the discussion on the cooperation of the Slovenian police with other police forces in the EU, a presentation was organised of the work of the Dolga Vas Police Cooperation Centre, where the Slovenian, Austrian and Hungarian police jointly carry out tasks defined in bilateral international treaties on police cooperation between these states. There was also a presentation of the excellent cooperation of the police forces of Slovenia, Austria and Italy at the Vrata Megvarje Police Cooperation Centre.
