Today, on 17 April 2009 a two-day international conference on migration that was organized by the Association of practitioners of internal administrative affairs concluded in Terme Čatež.

The participants discussed the unified procedures to obtain work permits and residence permits, the importance of cooperation between all institutions that are active in the area of migration as well as the implementation of modern information technology in visa procedures, procedures of obtaining international protection and registration of the population.

Among others, they also discussed the current problems of misuse of the procedures to obtain the status of foreigners. Representatives of the police also participated with seminars at the conference: Tomaž Peršolja from the Organized Criminality Sector at the Criminal Police Directorate and Andrej Janežič from the Border Police Sector of the Uniformed Police Directorate at the General Police Directorate. They presented the results and statistical data of the police, referring to the misuse of legal institutes, by which criminal networks obtain residence permits for aliens in Slovenia.

The participants agreed that to achieve an improvement in the situation and for the prevention of such misuse, good cooperation between all institutions that work in the area of migration is of key importance. Data exchange among the agencies as well as the implementation of modern information technologies is also extremely significant. Foreign lecturers presented good practices in preventing and sanctioning marriages of convenience, misuse of asylum procedures and misuse of procedures to obtain work permits and residency permits, which are known in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland and Sweden.
