Assuming his new position, Damjan Petrič, a career police officer and criminal investigator with more than 37 years of work experience, expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and said he was honoured to be entrusted with such a responsible task. He said: "I see this position as a duty to protect the integrity of the institution, support its people, and build an environment in which they can carry out their mission with a sense of pride and confidence."

He also said that his guiding principle will be a modern, effective, and trustworthy police force that both citizens and institutions can rely on, but that this is not possible without police employees, who are the driving force and the greatest asset of this system. He therefore believes it is necessary to invest in people, working conditions, appropriate equipment, training and education, opportunities for fair career advancement and professional growth of employees, as well as their health and well-being. Given the pressing staffing situation in the police force, he also advocated that the status of this profession needs to be strengthened again as a matter of priority, through systematic investment in human resources and respect for the profession.
