Speeding remains one of the main causes of serious road accidents. We will therefore be running a campaign to reduce speeding on our roads between 3 and 9 August 2026.
We will be stepping up enforcement against speeding drivers
As part of a Europe-wide coordinated enforcement operation taking place simultaneously across several European countries, police officers will increase checks on speeding drivers as part of their regular duties.
Police directorates will also carry out specific checks on dangerous stretches of road within their areas, some using the so-called chain methodology, meaning that several police patrols will operate on selected routes.
Traffic on our roads remains heavy
We would like to remind all road users that we are still halfway through the summer season. Traffic congestion has not yet eased, and we can expect heavier traffic in August due to holidays and roadworks, resulting in busier roads and traffic jams, particularly on routes to tourist destinations. There are also many motorcyclists on these routes. However, by driving responsibly, calmly and patiently, we can help to make the last month of summer safer and reduce the number of tragic accidents such as those we have recently witnessed.
